The case for engineered wood
Choose your look and construction
Engineered wood varies by veneer, core, and wear layer. These choices decide how it looks and how long it lasts.
Oak veneer
The most popular look, classic grain over a stable core.
Hickory veneer
Strong grain character and a hard wearing surface.
Walnut veneer
A darker, richer tone for a refined feel.
Wear layer
A thicker top veneer can be sanded and refinished at least once, a thinner one cannot.
What to know before choosing engineered wood
Where engineered wood works best
Living rooms, bedrooms, hallways, and importantly basements and rooms over concrete where solid hardwood is not an option.
What to consider
It is real wood on top but the wear layer is thinner than solid hardwood, so it can usually be refinished only once or not at all. It is not waterproof, so it is still not the choice for bathrooms or laundry rooms.

Common questions
Is engineered wood real wood?
Yes. The top layer is genuine hardwood, bonded to a stable core beneath it.
Can engineered wood go in a basement?
Yes. Its layered core handles moisture and temperature swings far better than solid hardwood, making it a strong basement option.
Can it be refinished?
Sometimes. A thick wear layer can be refinished once, a thin one cannot, so the veneer thickness matters at purchase.
How does the cost compare to solid hardwood?
It is usually more affordable than solid hardwood while giving a very similar look.
Is it waterproof?
No. It resists humidity better than solid wood but should not be used in wet areas.
